        Duke Coffeehouse

        Friday, April 6, 2012; 9 PM - 1:30 AM

        FREE Admission / BYOB

        9pm: Chamber Music

        10pm: Dissertation Dance Piece

        11pm: The Beat Report

        12am: Treee City

It'll be a night of all kinds of music at the Duke Coffeehouse - part of the Duke Music Department's Encounters series.

There will be a set of chamber music, performed by ensemble-in-residence Wet Ink, featuring new works written by my colleagues in the composition program at Duke (9 PM). At 10 PM, Wet Ink will team up with other local musicians including Rachael Elliott (bassoon), Don Eagle (trumpet), Mike Kris (trombone) and Jamie Keesecker (horn), conductor Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant, and me as laptop DJ, for my dissertation composition - a new work of instrumental/electronic dance music for 7 wind instruments, soprano singer, and electronica. We'll play the first movement, followed by a 30-minute solo DJ set from me, and conclude with the second and third movements of my dissertation piece. After this, Chapel Hill’s The Beat Report and Durham's Treee City will keep the party going with electronic dance music!

It's an electronic representation of what will be a live, electro-acoustic performance. The piece combines styles from electronic dance music genres such as techno, bass, and dubstep with classical instrumentation. It includes recordings I made in the Intensive Care Unit at Duke Hospital while recovering from brain surgery in October 2010, and it represents not only my interest in the musical opportunities and social benefits of combining the worlds of club and classical music, but also my difficult yet successful and character-building recovery from brain trauma.

The Duke Coffeehouse is located in the back of the Crowell Building (map) on Duke's East Campus, nearest to Buchanan Blvd. It's BYOB, so please bring your own refreshments, and your dancing shoes.
