Alex Kotch Music

             Biography

I'm a composer of instrumental, electroacoustic, and electronic music, ranging from chamber works to remixes. I'm also an active performer on clarinets, saxophones, laptop, and djembe.

I began clarinet lessons at age 11 in my home town of Chapel Hill, NC and took up the tenor saxophone while in high school. At Brown University, I was a member of the Orchestra's clarinet section all four years and played in the jazz band and combos. I won the 2004 Concerto Competition with Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto, which I performed with the orchestra that December. I'm also the recipient of Brown’s Margerie McColl Award, the Buxtehude Premium, and the Weston Fine Arts Award for Music Composition and Performance. In fall, 2004, Whit Bernard and I revived Brown New Music, and we were co-chairs from 2004-2007, presenting concerts and guest artist residencies. My original works have been performed at Brown, the Brevard Music Center, California Summer Music, Music07, and the Norfolk Contemporary Music Workshop, where I composed on fellowship. My piano trio, At Bay, was selected by the Juventas ensemble of Boston for performances in December 2006. My bathroom-graffiti-inspired sound-art installation at Brown, No one will be watching us, made national news in March 2006 by way of the Associate Press and abcnews.com, and was featured as part of the Providence FirstWorks Festival’s Pixilerations Gallery in September and October of 2006. My composition teachers include Gerald Shapiro, Butch Rovan, Todd Winkler, Alvin Lucier, Don Freund, Alejandro Viñao, Martin Bresnick, David Tcimpidis, Michel Merlet, Scott Lindroth, and Stephen Jaffe. Ensembles such as eighth blackbird, Ensemble Zellig, and Trio Saxiana have performed my works. I've also been a jazz DJ for two radio stations, the publicist for the Rebeca Vallejo Project, and lived in Madrid, Spain, where I worked at La Escuela de Música Creativa, a jazz music school.

I'm currently working towards a Ph.D. in composition at Duke University, where I study with Scott Lindroth and perform in the Duke New Music Ensemble and the Djembe Ensemble. Current projects include a work for solo violin (Andrew Tholl) and electronics, a work for 100 saxophonists for Saxophones en Fete in Paris, and a work for cello (Silvia Lenzi), dancer, and electronics.
